What is RADEM?

History and Objectives

RADEM is a non-governmental, apolitical, laic non-profit organization founded in 1999 by three concerned citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo:  Mr. Jibrill KASONGO MULONGO, Mr. Emery KABUGI, Mr. Hakim MAYUTO.  These three young men recognized the need for an organization that could help the underprivileged, uncared for youth of their community.

Young people growing up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and most other African countries for that matter, face many difficulties starting from day one of their life.  Poverty, lack of education and guidance, poor healthcare, and prominence of disease and sickness, among others, are some of the barriers that trouble these children, eventually leading them to a life of mendacity, alcoholism, unemployment, robbery, prostitution, sexual transmitted diseaes and HIV-AIDS.

To fight this pattern, these three young men and many other local volunteers (Dr Paul MAKAN MAWAW, Dr Micky ILUNGA INA MUTOMBO, Rose MAYUTO MWADJUMA, Abel SENDWE, etc) have band together to create a community of comfort, guidance, and education for the unfortunate youth.  RADEM's primary objective is to care for and help young people who find themselves in troubling situations and to contribute to the multi-faceted development of the nation by supporting community action and change at the roots of problems. RADEM expect to run long terme projects which lead to sustainable development and auto-sufficiency.

Domains of Intervention

RADEM operates under four domains of intervention:

Primary Care (Reproductive health care, fight against HIV/AIDS, alimentary security, nutritional promotion, provision of essential medicines and supllies in rural ares, training of local helth workers).

Socio-Professional Support (handicraft promotion, stitching/needlework, cobbler work, data processing, and diverse micro projects concerning incomes generation).

Protection and Sensible Management of the Environment (sanitation, rehabilitation, etc)

Humanitarian Assistance (mostly emergencies, depending on situation)

Who are the recipients?

The beneficiaries of RADEM's programs are usually unemployed youth, girls and boys, between the ages of 13 and 25, educated or not, but who are capable of exercising a profitable activity; or those in need of serious health care.

Currently, RADEM's zone of action is limited to the province of Katanga.  We are more than willing to extend our services to other rural areas and other provinces, but need more financial and technical support to do so. We want to establish strong parternship with other local or international NGOs.
